Exploring the Culinary Wonders of H Mart's Expansive Food Hall at American Dream Mall
H Mart, the leading Asian grocery store chain in the country, has recently opened its largest food hall in the Northeast at the American Dream mall in East Rutherford, New Jersey. With over 16,860 square feet of space and 11 different eateries, this food hall promises to be a culinary destination for Asian food enthusiasts. But does the size and scale of this new H Mart food hall translate to an exceptional dining experience? Let's dive in and explore the good, the bad, and the overall vibe of this highly anticipated Asian food hall.

Discover the Diverse Flavors and Experiences Awaiting at H Mart's Newest Culinary Destination

The Good: Indulge in Comforting Hot Pot and Delectable Korean Delights

One of the standout features of the H Mart food hall is the Wok Bar, where customers can create their own personalized hot pot experience. Diners are presented with a wide array of fresh vegetables, meats, and noodles, allowing them to curate their perfect hot pot dish. The broth, which can be customized to different spice levels, is remarkably flavorful, with a numbing sensation that only enhances the overall comforting experience.Another highlight is the rose ddeok-bokki from bb.q chicken. This Korean street food dish, featuring tubular rice cakes in a creamy tomato sauce, is a delightful departure from the traditional spicy version. The mild yet flavorful sauce is a welcome change of pace, and the option to add cheese on top takes this dish to new heights of indulgence.

The Good: Quench Your Thirst at the Self-Serve Beer Wall

The H Mart food hall also features a unique self-serve beer wall at the Let Them Talk Bar. Offering over 30 draft options, all priced at just each, this setup allows customers to pour their own drinks with ease. Whether you're in the mood for a refreshing IPA or a classic beer, the variety on offer ensures there's something to suit every palate.

The Bad: Disappointing Korean Sandwiches and Lackluster Japanese Curry

While the Wok Bar and bb.q chicken offerings were standouts, not every vendor at the H Mart food hall lived up to expectations. The bulgogi sandwich from K-Town Hero, for instance, fell short with its soggy bread and flavorless protein. The kimchi dusted fries, which promised an extra burst of flavor, were barely distinguishable from regular French fries.Similarly, the Japanese curry dishes from Don Don Curry failed to impress. Despite the expectation of a rich, umami-packed experience, the pork cutlet curry was disappointingly average, with the pork itself being dry and lacking in flavor.

The Vibe: A Spacious and Clean Food Hall, but Potential for Noise

The H Mart food hall at the American Dream mall boasts ample seating and a clean, well-maintained environment. The large space and high ceilings create a sense of openness, making it an inviting destination for families and groups. However, the potential for the food hall to become noisy when at full capacity is something to consider, as the acoustics may not be ideal for those seeking a more intimate dining experience.

The Bottom Line: Size Doesn't Always Equate to Quality

As an avid H Mart shopper, I had high expectations for the brand's newest and largest food hall in the Northeast. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience fell short of the hype. While the Wok Bar and bb.q chicken offerings were standouts, the disappointing Korean sandwiches, lackluster Japanese curry, and the presence of vendors that were not even open on the day of my visit left me feeling underwhelmed. The food hall's size and flashy features, such as the giant bubble tea statue and the self-serve beer wall, do not make up for the lack of consistency and quality across the various eateries. It's a shame that H Mart, known for its exceptional Asian grocery offerings, has not been able to translate that same level of excellence to its food hall experience.Unless you're specifically craving the hot pot or rose ddeok-bokki, the H Mart food hall at the American Dream mall may not be worth the trip, as many of the same or similar offerings can be found at your local H Mart store. The size and scale of this food hall may impress, but it's the quality and consistency of the culinary experience that truly matters.
